Are Solar Panels Worth It in London? A 2026 Guide
Rising energy bills, 0% VAT, and the Smart Export Guarantee make 2026 one of the best years yet to go solar in London. Here is what you need to know.
Energy bills in London have risen sharply over the past three years, and most forecasters expect them to stay elevated well into the next decade. Against that backdrop, more and more homeowners are asking the same question: are solar panels actually worth it in London?
The short answer is yes — and 2026 is one of the best years to make the move. Here is everything you need to know before booking a survey.
Do solar panels work in London's climate?
This is the question we hear most often, and it is a fair one. London is not exactly famous for its sunshine.
The good news is that solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine. Even on overcast days, a well-sized system produces a meaningful amount of power. London receives around 1,500 hours of sunshine per year — comparable to many parts of Germany, which has one of the highest rates of solar adoption in the world.
A typical 4 kWp system installed on a south-facing roof in London will generate approximately 3,400–3,800 kWh per year. For context, the average UK household uses around 3,500 kWh annually. That means a correctly sized system can cover close to 100% of your electricity needs in summer, and a meaningful proportion year-round.
East- and west-facing roofs generate around 15–20% less than south-facing, but they still produce a strong return. North-facing roofs are generally not suitable.
How much can you save on energy bills?
The savings depend on three things: the size of your system, how much electricity you use during daylight hours, and your current tariff.
For a typical 3–4 bedroom London home on a standard variable tariff:
- Self-consumption savings: £500–£900 per year (electricity you generate and use yourself, avoiding grid import)
- Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments: £80–£200 per year (for surplus electricity exported to the grid)
- Total annual benefit: £600–£1,100 per year
At those figures, a 4 kWp system costing around £7,000–£9,000 installed typically pays back in 8–12 years — and panels carry a 25-year performance warranty. Everything after payback is pure saving.
If you add a battery storage system, you can store surplus daytime generation and use it in the evening, pushing self-consumption rates from around 30–40% up to 70–80%. That significantly improves the financial case, though it adds to the upfront cost.
What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a government-backed scheme that requires licensed energy suppliers to pay you for every unit of surplus electricity you export to the grid. Rates vary by supplier — currently between 4p and 15p per kWh — and you can switch supplier to get a better rate at any time.
To qualify, your system must be MCS-certified. Every Olectrics installation is MCS-certified as standard, so you can register for SEG payments immediately after your system goes live.
Is there VAT on solar panels?
Yes — or rather, no. VAT on residential solar panel installations in Great Britain is currently 0%, having been reduced from 5% in April 2022. This applies to the panels, inverter, mounting hardware, and installation labour.
That 0% rate is confirmed through at least 2027, making now a good time to lock in the saving.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels in London?
In most cases, no. Solar panels on a pitched roof are permitted development in England, meaning you do not need to apply for planning permission, provided:
- The panels do not protrude more than 200mm beyond the roof plane
- The installation does not exceed the highest part of the roof (excluding the chimney)
- The property is not in a conservation area or a listed building
If your home is in a conservation area or is listed, you will need to apply for planning permission or listed building consent. We check this during the free survey and advise accordingly — it does not necessarily rule out solar, but it does require a different process.
What size system do I need?
For most 3–4 bedroom London homes, a 4–6 kWp system (10–15 panels) is the right fit. We size every system based on:
- Your actual annual electricity consumption (from your bills)
- Your roof's orientation, pitch, and available area
- Any shading from trees, chimneys, or neighbouring buildings
- Whether you want battery storage now or want to add it later
We carry out a full roof survey before quoting — we never size a system from a satellite image alone.
How long does installation take?
Most residential solar installations are completed in one to two days. The process looks like this:
- Free roof survey — we assess your roof, check your energy usage, and design the right system
- Fixed-price quote — no hidden costs, no surprises
- DNO notification — we notify your Distribution Network Operator on your behalf (required for systems over 3.68 kWp)
- Installation — typically one to two days on site
- MCS certification — issued on completion, required for SEG registration
- Handover — we walk you through the monitoring app and answer any questions
Why choose an MCS-certified installer?
MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certification is the industry standard for solar installations in the UK. It is required to:
- Qualify for Smart Export Guarantee payments
- Validate the manufacturer's panel warranty
- Satisfy most mortgage lenders and home insurers
All Olectrics solar installations are carried out by NICEIC-approved engineers and certified to MCS standards. We handle all the paperwork — DNO notifications, MCS certification, and SEG registration guidance — so you do not have to.
What about battery storage?
Battery storage lets you save surplus solar generation during the day and use it in the evening, when the sun has gone down but your household demand is at its peak. The most popular systems currently are the Tesla Powerwall, GivEnergy, and Solis batteries.
Adding a battery typically costs £3,000–£6,000 on top of the solar installation. It is not essential, but it significantly improves the economics if you are out during the day and use most of your electricity in the evenings.
We can install battery storage at the same time as your solar panels, or retrofit it to an existing system later.
Is 2026 a good time to go solar in London?
Yes, for several reasons:
- Energy prices remain high — the payback period is shorter than it was five years ago
- 0% VAT is confirmed through at least 2027
- Panel and inverter prices have fallen significantly over the past decade and have now stabilised
- SEG rates are competitive — some suppliers are paying up to 15p per unit
- Battery storage costs are falling — making the full self-consumption case increasingly attractive
The main risk of waiting is that energy prices could fall — but most analysts expect them to remain elevated, and the 0% VAT rate is not guaranteed beyond 2027.
